Professional Acupuncture Training in Ireland ICTCM

FAQ for EU Students Considering the Irish College of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Every year, students travel from across Europe to study at the Irish College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ICTCM). Some relocate to Dublin for the duration of the programme. Others fly in for teaching weekends.

If you’re wondering, “Is it really possible to train in Ireland while living abroad?” — the answer is yes. Many have done it successfully, and you can too.

If you’re on the fence about the logistics, here’s what you need to know.

Is It Realistic to Travel from Another EU Country?

Absolutely.

ICTCM is located in Dublin 3, close to the M1 and M50 motorways — just about 15 minutes from Dublin Airport via the Port Tunnel. There are nearby hotels, plus excellent public transport links including buses, trains, and trams.

Many students regularly:

  • Fly in on Friday evenings
  • Attend classes over the weekend
  • Fly home on Sunday evening

Because of the college’s convenient location, weekend travel is straightforward and very manageable from the EU or UK.

However, please note that this programme does NOT qualify Overseas students to get a student visa to live in Ireland.

How Much of the Course Is Online?

Since COVID, ICTCM has adopted a blended learning model that makes study far more accessible for those who live outside Ireland.

Approximately 50% of the taught programme is delivered live via Zoom in the first two years, meaning you can attend from anywhere in the world.

During the first two years:

  • Classes take place roughly one weekend per month (Saturday & Sunday)
  • There are 10 teaching weekends per year
  • Plus 2 examination weekends in College
  • Much of the theory is delivered live via Zoom on specified dates

This typically results in around 7 in-person trips per year during the first two years — far fewer than you might initially expect.

What About the Clinical Training (Year 3)?

Year 3 is more intensive and requires greater in-person attendance.

From September to March, students attend the teaching clinic every two weeks. This is hands-on clinical practice under supervision — a vital step in becoming a confident practitioner.

Once you successfully complete your clinical assessments, you are fully qualified to set up your own TCM Acupuncture clinic.

In total, that’s just two and a half years to qualify as a TCM Practitioner.

Can I Practice in My Home Country?

ICTCM graduates are qualified to practise in Ireland and the UK.

However, regulations vary from country to country, so it’s important to check the specific professional requirements in your home nation if you wish to practice there.

Is This Path Possible for You?

If your main concern is logistics — travel, time commitment, or feasibility — know that many EU and UK students have successfully balanced work, family life, and international travel while training at the ICTCM.

With:

  • A blended online model
  • Monthly weekend structure
  • Convenient airport access
  • A clear two-and-a-half-year path to qualification

Professional Acupuncture TCM Training in Ireland may be far more achievable than you think.
