The Clinical year of the Acupuncture Training programme at the Irish College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ICTCM) represents a pivotal phase in the journey toward becoming a professional TCM Acupuncturist. The third year focuses on hands-on clinical practice, enabling students to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills they have developed during the initial two years of training.
Students who successfully complete all of the academic and practical examinations in years one and two, progress from the College into the Teaching Clinic for the third and final year. This Clinical year begins in September, and is more intensive than the previous years, with fortnightly teaching weekends during the first six months. The schedule meets the hours requirement for professional Acupuncture training while accommodating adult learners who may have work and family commitments.
Clinical Trainees
Clinical trainees provide their own clients for the teaching clinic. The clients should be from the geographical area in which they intend to set up their own TCM clinic. This means that once they become qualified, they have already established a client base, and are able to go straight into practice.
Clinical Supervisors
This third year involves treating clients under the supervision of highly qualified Clinical Supervisors and under the direction of the Clinical Director. The Clinical Supervisors are also experienced TCM Practitioners who run their own clinics.
The Clinical Director brings first hand knowledge of working in top hospitals and universities in China. This guidance and support becomes invaluable as the newly qualified practitioners transition from clinical trainees into running their own clinics.
Clinical Training
The clinical training emphasises mastery of diagnostic techniques integral to Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as pulse-, tongue-, asking-, listening-, and looking diagnosis, and implementing these in the clinical setting.
The trainees will take a case history, determine the causes of disharmony and disease, and select the appropriate methods of treatment. They will learn how to implement the clinical safety requirements, patient management, interpersonal and communication skills, and clinical management.
Students also refine their skills in therapeutic methods, including Acupuncture point needling, cupping, moxibustion, and providing dietary and lifestyle advice based on TCM principles. For a full breakdown of topics, see the clinical year syllabus here.
The clinical year at the ICTCM is a transformative experience that bridges academic learning with real-world application. It equips students with the skills, confidence, and qualifications needed to embark on a rewarding career as TCM Acupuncturists. By combining rigorous training with practical exposure, ICTCM ensures that its graduates are well-prepared to provide high-quality care rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.
