The Experience

What to expect from being a student at the Irish College of Traditional Chinese Medicine

The ICTCM Experience: A Comprehensive Transformation

The experience of studying with us on the Acupuncture course, or as a postgraduate student specialising in a different Chinese medical field, have much in common. Here’s what you can expect:

A Challenge

A transformative path of education and training, especially a part-time one, requires hard-work, committment and perhaps even some blood, sweat and tears. There are fewer tears for the post-grads – they have been here before, are coming back for more and know what to both expect and look-forward to.

If you join our undergraduate-level course, for three rigorous years of theoretical education and practical skills training, you will embark on a transformative path that goes beyond mere technical training. We provide a thorough theoretical foundation in TCM principles, seamlessly blending ancient wisdom with skills training in traditional clinical Acupuncture TCM practice.

Enjoyment and intellectual satisfaction

Learning to find the location of Acupuncture points

As undergraduate-level students start to gain confidence with Acupuncture point location and Traditional Chinese Medical theory, they enjoy their teaching weekends in College and via Zoom more and more. As they start to appreciate the complex and interconnected nature of TCM’s understanding of health and illness they are no longer daunted by having to learn a whole new technical medical vocabulary and are often amazed at the medical insights written down, preserved for thousands of years and still available for clinical use today.

An Intimate Learning Environment

Small group teaching and training settings are run and supervised by dedicated TCM professionals. Our experienced teachers, including a TCM practitioner with over 40 years of clinical expertise, are striving to bringing out the best in every student.

Most of our teachers have been undergradates at the College themselves and know the work involved in changing career. They understand the pressures that students experience at the start and give advice and guidance from their own journey with us as students.

Hands-On Clinical Training

You gain invaluable practical experience of treating people wilth real medical needs at our Teaching Clinic in Dublin, under the guidance of seasoned TCM teachers and practitioners. This enables you to develop confidence in diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions according to the principles of TCM, and developing professional practical treatment skills and strategies. Graduates greatly value this aspect of each of the training programmes we offer.

Blended Course Delivery

The part-time, weekend-only format of most of our programmes are designed to accommodate the needs of working people and those with home and family commitments. You can enjoy a blend of on-site, mainly practical sessions in the College in Dublin, and online taught group sessions via Zoom, allowing you to learn the underpinning TCM theory from the comfort of your own home.

A Comprehensive Curriculum

You will gain expertise in TCM diagnostic methods, including Pulse, Tongue, Asking, and Looking diagnoses on the Lic.TCM Acupuncture Training course and learn how to diagnose and treat the vast array of conditions treatable through Acupuncture TCM, from mild discomforts to debilitating diseases, for patients of all ages. At postgraduate level you develop additional Chinese Medicine treatment options to alleviate your clients’ medical conditions and to aid them towards better health and well-being.

Each Curriculum is detailed and comprehensive and is another important factor enabling you to confidently build up expertise as a Chinese Medical professional.

Rewarding and leading to a Recognised Qualification

Upon successful completion, on the Lic.TCM you will be qualified to practice Acupuncture TCM professionally in Ireland or the UK and are eligible to seek membership of the Professional Register of TCM (PRTCM), a professional body recognised by major health insurance providers in Ireland.

You are then eligible to apply for one of our postgraduate programmes when the time is right for you. Also, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine has sent delegates to visit us on a number of occassions and has recognised the qualification for entry to their part-time postgraduate programmes as and when these are available.
