Teaching the art of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Qigong and Medical Qigong at the ICTCM in Ireland

In the early 1980s, when our founder and Director Prof. Tom Shanahan was studying in Nanjing, China on an Advanced Clinical Training programme of Acupuncture TCM, he had the rare opportunity to witness first-hand a Medical Qigong Treatment.

A Medical Qigong doctor was carrying out a Medical treatment in one of the Associated Hospitals of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medcine, and Tom was invited to observe. For various reasons, Medical Qigong of this type is rarely discussed openly and is usually taught one-to-one.

During the following nearly 20 years, Tom who visits China on a regular basis to give papers at TCM conferences, sought out a qualified and experienced teacher of Qigong and Medical Qigong to teach Advanced Clinical skills on a one month intensive programme to a group of teachers and graduates from the ICTCM. The first of these programmes was run successfully in Guangzhou in 2000.

This was the start of the Irish College of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s journey in becoming one of the few Academic institutions across the world able to offer training in this specific and highly-prized medical modality of Chinese Medicine.
